Thursday Night Football at Sapphire: Houston at Jacksonville

mnftnfnfl
There are a few people we will keep anonymous that had Houston making it to the Super Bowl before the season started. No one could have predicted that in Week 14 that the Houston Texans, with stars JJ Watt, Andre Johnson, Arian Foster and Ed Reed would be last place in the NFL. Instead of a ring, they may be gifted with the number one pick in next April’s draft. Injuries have plagued this Houston team, putting coach Gary Kubiak in the (scorching) hot seat. The Texans may have found their quarterback of the future during their 10 game losing streak in Case Keenum. Keenum played college ball at nearby University of Houston, where he threw record breaking numbers before being drafted by the hometown team. Last week against the Patriots, the Texans looked like the team from last year. Although they lost 34-31, Houston kept up with New England for nearly every second of the game.
Unlike Houston, Jacksonville did not have any expectations this year. First year coach Gus Bradley took over what many considered the worst roster in the NFL. After an 0-8 start, one win would be graciously accepted by Jaguars’ fans. Winning 3 of their last 4, the Jaguars actually have a better record than the Houston Texans (no need to pinch yourself, you aren’t dreaming). Bradley has done a good job of keeping the team’s focus, and look to win their third straight game. One of the wins was against this very same Houston team, in Houston. The score was 13-6.
Amazingly enough, both teams are not mathematically eliminated from making the playoffs. We’ll make a bold prediction and say it won’t happen, but this the type of game many people like to place parlay cards on. The Texans rank in the top half of the NFL in rushing and passing yards this season. It’s their turnovers that kill drives, Houston is -12 in turnover ratio. Houston is ranked third in total defense, and second in pass defense. Jacksonville is on the other end of the spectrum, being dead last in total offense and third from last in points allowed.
